THE POST OAK HOTEL
FMG DESIGN

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston is the city’s only AAA Five-Diamond Destination. The project is a 30-story, 403-feet high combination hotel-apartment-office building in the Houston Galleria area. The scope of services conducted by FMG Design included developing a comprehensive site aesthetic, exterior, interior and parking signage program, one that included identification, information, directional, and regulatory signage for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The design team for The Post Oak was led by Ryan Keen. Ryan Keen and Cliff Maxwell focused primarily on designing the interior graphics, and I was given the task of designing the exterior graphics and garage. The client requested that we use natural patterns on the exterior signage featuring oak leaves. When I originally presented the exterior concepts, I presented a warmer palette using dark bronze. However, as the project progressed through design development, the client and the architect, Gensler, preferred the use of black instead. The black metal with the etched glass and the white stone really make for distinctive, upscale, and classy signage system. This is just one reason why I enjoy being a part of the evolving design process.
