NATURE DISCOVERY CENTER

D|G STUDIOS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Nature Discovery Center was founded in 1979 and is dedicated to educating children and adults about nature, inspiring them to spend more time outdoors. It features two Discovery Rooms, which house hands-on exhibits and displays, and the Russ Pitman Park, a 4-acre property with a variety of amenities.

This was the first environmental project that I had the chance to design and manage myself. The park was in need of eye-catching wayfinding graphics as well as an assortment of information graphics that described what wildlife visitors may encounter throughout their journey in the park. Nature Discovery Center was under construction at the time, so they requested that we reuse some of their bricks and incorporate them into the signage system. I also liked the idea of using rustic metals, such as corten steel, but I understood that it would bleed into the concrete with every rainfall. To avoid this, I requested that the fabricator use a textured paint method that looked like corten, but of course, would be more practical for exterior signage and weather conditions. The client was happy with the result, and I must say that having the chance to design something for children to enjoy always makes my job more worthwhile.
