 D|G STUDIOS

ALLEY THEATRE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Alley Theatre is a Tony Award-winning theatre company in Houston. It is the oldest professional theatre company in Texas and the third oldest resident theatre in the United States.

When this project hit D|G Studios, I immediately ran over to Dawn Diamond's desk and asked her to please choose me as the designer on the project. Intrigued by my enthusiasm, she agreed with this idea, and we both enjoyed working on this together. The scope included two donor walls and several rooms assigned to different donors that needed special lettering as well as standard ADA room signage.

I eventually presented the idea of the triangle shape (that mimicked the skylight and the "A" in "Alley") to use for the signage as well as the donor graphics. The triangular shapes on the donor walls fit like puzzle pieces. If a donor later decides to contribute more, the former triangular plaque can be taken down, and a larger plaque can fit into place easily. The ADA signage plaques and the letterforms also mimic the wedged "A" shape in the way that they all protrude from the wall on one side. We managed to choose materials well within budget, and the client was very pleased with the end result.
